Insomnia

Sometimes getting a good night’s sleep can be the most elusive part of a person’s life. Recognizing the additional behavioral health challenges caused by a lack of sleep, Dr. Grosse specializes in helping patients obtain healthier sleep routines to optimize their daytime functioning. The medical community recognizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) as the first line of treatment. Dr. Grosse is specially trained in CBT-I

Cardiovascular Psychology

Heart issues can carry with them complex emotions and feelings. When a person is diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or experiences a heart attack, adjusting to the realities of a heart condition can be difficult to accept and to process. Dr. Grosse works with patients to help them make necessary lifestyle changes ranging from diet, to improving sleep patterns, quitting tobacco, and regular physical activity while also helping them better understand how to manage their emotions and stress. For some, awareness of their heart health creates a sense of worry, fear, and even regret. Behavioral Health offers a wide range of services for heart patients and works in consultation with each patient’s cardiac team to help patients improve their psychological and emotional well-being, especially those with complex heart issues.

Behavioral Management of Diabetes

In the United States, diabetes has become one of the most serious health issues, affecting millions of people. When the body struggles with blood sugar levels, this in turn affects the heart, kidneys, liver, and other organs. It can also lead to cancer and other diseases. The good news is that with proper education about diabetes and knowing what your numbers are, you can better manage this disease. Whether diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, Dr. Grosse understands the many challenges and sheer diligence required to keep up with all the “to do’s” to manage your condition. From diabetes burnout, diabetes distress, and anxiety from hypoglycemic episodes, behavioral health treatment can help you achieve a sense of control over diabetes. Dr. Grosse also helps families and caregivers, so they can enhance support for a diabetic spouse, parent, or child.

Behavioral Management of COPD

While there is not a cure for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, doctors have many medications and treatments to help manage the disease and slow its progression including inhalers, oxygen therapy, and other highly specialized care options. Behavioral health services help patients to live well by supporting a patient’s care plan, focusing on lifestyle changes, establishing healthier habits, and reducing the psychological burden of COPD. Living with a chronic cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue is challenging, and Dr. Grosse helps patients understand the importance of healthy choices, physical activity, adhering to medical treatment plans, and lifestyle changes. He focuses on supporting his patients emotional and psychological needs by providing coping skills training for exacerbations, activity pacing, breathing skills training, and relaxation strategies for those living with COPD. He also offers support for families and caregivers.

Grief Counseling

When a person loses someone, the psychological stress and sadness can be profound. While the grief process takes time, it is important to get support early on. Often, family members and friends need help navigating the feelings of loss, including what can be a life altering change in their own lives. Traumatic and sudden, unexpected losses are especially difficult to adjust to. Whether a person loses a spouse, parent, child, sibling, coworker, or friend, or experiences multiple losses in a short period of time, grief counseling can help. Dr. Grosse supports patients through the grief process using therapy and counseling to help his patients with their feelings, build coping skills, and better understand their own experiences. Some patients may also need support dealing with complex emotions such as anger, anxiety, guilt, and regret.

Psycho-oncology

For patients diagnosed and being treated for cancer, every day involves learning about the disease, treatment options, and how to cope with the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. From diagnosis to treatment, health psychology focuses on ways to support and manage patients’ emotions and feelings such as anxiety, sadness/depression, cognitive changes, mental fatigue, and other common concerns. By helping patients understand their emotional needs while working with his or her cancer care team, Dr. Grosse strives to enhance his patients’ quality of life during their cancer journey. Behavioral health services can help reduce the stress patients often experience and lead to stronger coping skills which in turn supports the individual’s overall cancer care plan.

Family Therapy for Chronic Illness

Caring for family members with chronic or terminal illnesses can be stressful, exhausting, and at times, confusing. For the person with a serious illness, discussing their feelings about their health with family can be difficult for them to express and even daunting. Dr. Grosse understands the challenges of both the patients and their caregivers, and how the illness overlaps with other aspects of their lives as individuals and as a group. Helping caregivers better understand health challenges, the scope of their role, and ways to cope with not only their loved one’s emotions, but also their own, often requires support. With Behavioral Health, therapies and support can make a tremendous difference in the quality of life of the whole family.

Caretaker Support for Parents

Perhaps one of life’s greatest challenges for parents is caring for a child with a severe physical, emotional, or chronic health condition. Dr. Grosse supports parents with their emotional needs and offers therapy to help them take care of themselves as they care for their children. From childhood cancers to type 1 diabetes, and other health concerns, Dr. Grosse helps parents with this journey, understanding and supporting their psychological needs and the uniqueness of their role.

From reimbursement concerns and documentation, to discharge planning, patient wellness and medication needs, to even workplace violence issues, providers feel the tug-of-war of daily demands. Caring for patients is a tremendous responsibility that can at times adversely impact even the most resilient professional. Behavioral health care can help providers bring into focus their our own quality of life needs, so they can receive timely support.
